Definition of the Total Station

Now-a-days The Total Station is the most popular software for Land Surveyors to use on the job site. The total station is created by combining an electronic theodolite, an electronic distance measuring device (E.D.M) & a micro processor containing memory unit with the purpose of finding out the coordinates concerning the reflector that arranges the instruments cross hairs on the reflector & at the same time work out the vertical and horizontal angles & the slope distances.

The recording, readings & the necessary calculation are performed through a micro processor situated in the instrument.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Total Station.

Benefits of The Total Station

  1. With the application of the laser plummets, the setting of the instrument on the tripod can be done quickly.
  2. On- board area computation allows the users to work out the area of field.
  3. Well suited with the local language.
  4. Computerization of the old maps.
  5. Calculation for the area can be performed more precisely.
  6. Graphical view of the plots and land for quick.
  7. Incorporation of the data base.
  8. Complete ( GIS ) formation (with map info software).
  9. The calculation can be made as per the requirements of users.
  10. Once the field jobs are completed, the map of area with dimensions is prepared after transmission of data.
  11. It is saves huge time. It can calculate up to three to 5 Km distance.

Drawbacks of The Total Station

  1. At the time of surveying, it becomes complicated for the Land Surveyor to monitor & examine the work.
  2. To evaluate the survey completely, it is essential to get back to the office & produce the drawings with the proper software.
  3. The instrument is expensive. The competent persons are needed to operate the Surveys with the total station.

When total station is used, the following safety measures should be undertaken

  1. In order to grasp the total station handle, both hands are should be used.
  2. Preserve the battery pack with the battery discharged.
  3. Any of the clamp screws should not over tighten.
  4. Maintain sufficient consistency to install tripod.
  5. It is recommended not to carry the tripod with the total station fixed on it, rather than centering.
  6. Take proper precaution at the time of the extracting the tribrach from the total station.
